Today the long awaited final part of The Hobbit trilogy is released in cinemas. As such I thought it would be the perfect time to start a challenge I have wanted to do for a while.
Following the journey of the hobbits in The Lord of the Rings it is 458 miles from Hobbiton to Rivendell. A distance I intend to cover myself with my runs. I am initially going to set myself a deadline of Christmas 2015 to finish this but if I find I am covering the ground a lot quicker then I will adjust this accordingly.
So why I am I doing this in the first place? Short answer; because I want to. Joking aside there are a few reasons I thought this would be a good idea.
Firstly Lord of the Rings has been my all time favourite book for about 15 years now. Completing this run, and the rest of the book afterwards hopefully, will remind me why I love it so much. I did try to walk it before, using a pedometer to track my mileage but I didn’t get very far
Secondly motivation. When I don’t have a race to aim for I sometimes find it hard to convince myself to go out, especially when the weather is less than great. I think the only reason I went out Monday was so I could play with my new toy. Having something fun to think about might help me get my butt out the door as winter drags on. That and imagining I’m being chased by the nine might make me run a bit quicker.
Finally I thought it might give me something more interesting to blog about. Plus the motivation to keep writing one. I know friends have told me that they like my running posts but there are only so many times I can write about how many puddles I slipped on or why men seem to think running in shorts when there is ice on the ground is a good idea. These posts will continue but there will also be ones about Middle Earth too.
Overall I don’t know how this will affect my blog. I have a few ideas for early posts but after that we will see how it goes.
If you wish to join me the full details of the challenge can be found here.
