Saturday was a rather exciting day for me. Me and Bobby had booked tickets for Future Cinema‘s showing of Bugsy Malone. The concept behind this is amazingly simple, you watch the film, but the people organising it will bring it to life around you. It leads to a truly unique experience. Still not sure what I mean? This YouTube clip might help.

Of course this meant it was a great excuse to dress up and play with new make up and hair, though I was quite impressed with the result. The only problem was that I ended up doing my hair really early as I wasn’t sure how long it would take and it then didn’t quite last the evening. It had mostly fallen out by the time we all started dancing at the end, but I was quite impressed with it. Especially as it was a first attempt as I hadn’t really had a chance to practice.

We got to the venue early, just as the matinee was kicking out in fact, to make sure we knew where it was and to check what time they were opening the doors to make sure we got a good seat then headed off to find a nice pub to have a drink and some food. We ended up in the Railway Tavern by Limehouse station which as nice enough and we could watch all the people from the afternoon going past, it was nice that so many people had dressed up. It really put us in a good mood for the evening. Then we jumped on the DLR up to Tower Gateway as that was where the nearest pub that I knew did food was located. We did attract some interesting looks wandering round and were snapped by at least two curious tourists but on the whole it was nice to just go for a wander.

We headed back to Limehouse relatively early to make sure we would be back in plenty of time and went back to the Railway Tavern as I needed the loo. We weren’t the only people in there this time. There were a few other people similarly dressed and I started to get rather excited. We didn’t stay there long before heading back up to the Troxy where we were informed that we were rather early, well yes, we did know that, and we actually wanted to go down the side of the building and use the entrance round there. Having established where we were meant to be and not particularly wanting to hang round a dodgy bit of London when none else was there yet we went to the pub across the road for a quick one while we waited.

When we came back the whole area had been transformed. There was a bit of a queue now and there were actors going up and down the line and interacting with the public. We were ‘interviewed’ by a reporter for the New York Times about what we thought about the recent splurge attacks, had several people comment on our outfits, favourite one has to be the guy who asked if my borrowed fur coat was dalmatian and how many dawgs went into it.

Then we got inside the Speakeasy. They had really gone to town with recreating it, after going down a corridor you came to a large bookcase where you had to present a book to go through (there was a pile you could help yourself to for those of us who didn’t bring our own). Then when you got through it was like really being in Fat Sam’s. We found a table and I made myself comfortable while Bobby went to the bar. There was still lots to see inside, Fat Sam came over to ask us if we had seen Bugsy, then the man himself came over to ask why I never called him. Hadn’t I enjoyed it when he took me out for meatballs last week? That was a first for me, being chatted up by a famous gangster!

Before long the entertainment started. Fat Sam compered as a number of cabaret acts took to the stage, our favourite has to be the pair of dancing girls who called themselves The Bee’s Knees. This did also follow the plot of the film with loads of interaction all the way through. Tallulah came out among the tables for her number. The audience were encouraged to audition as dancers in the club, the job of course being given to Blousey. Lena Marelli burst in at one point, a role I will always remember as having been played by my sister in her school production. We even cheered on Leroy as he began his career as a boxer.

Then the film started. There was a great atmosphere in the place by now. Everyone seemed to be having a really great time and cheering and singing along were actively encouraged. Although the interaction was greatly reduced it didn’t stop once the film started, though was mostly limited to people coming through as appropriate. I couldn’t help laughing when they finished singing Bad Guys danced into the SpeakEasy and through the tables. Then of course there was the custard pie fight at the end. They passed out cans of foam and paper plates then paused the film so people could make up some pies and put on the plastic ponchos they had provided. Then all hell broke loose. I don’t think anyone was still watching the film at this point as pies went flying in every direction and gangsters burst in with splurge guns and started spraying everyone in sight. The fighting stopped when the final song started for which everyone joined in and several people, us included, ended up dancing on the stage to. After that it just became a great party venue, the tables were pushed back and everyone started dancing and generally having a great time. I think we both would have liked to have stayed later but it was very warm in there and I had started to get a mammoth headache so we decided to call it a night and head off.

Overall we had a great time. so good in fact that we have booked to go again during my Easter holidays, and this time we intend to stay until the end! Unfortunately neither of us took a camera with us, probably a good thing as we didn’t want to risk it getting, Splurged/stolen/broken, but Future Cinema’s Flickr can be foundhere.

I have got a bit behind with the whole BatFit thing. At first it was because it was near impossible to eat healthily while I was doing the panto. Yes I know I could have gone to Tesco’s and got a salad or something instead of McDonald’s and I didn’t have to go to the pub quite so often, but it’s a good excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Lately I have been so stressed with work that the thought oncoming home and cooking something healthy did not seem like a good idea. I have been trying but it’s still not as good as it could be.

So now the challenges. I will be doing these consecutively, plus the next one when it is updated. The first challenge is to give up a bad habit and replace it with a good one. Well, there is one bad habit I have been fighting with on and off for years. I bite my nails. The reason this one is such a problem for me is I don’t do it all the time. Stopping is not the problem. The challenge comes from not starting again. Even up to starting to write this post I wasn’t sure what to replace this with, but it has just struck me that the main reason I start again is either stress, I’m sure I can find more constructive outlets, and me breaking my nails and being really annoyed by the rough edge. So new good habit is going to be actually carrying a nail file with me, and just generally taking better care of them. If I can get my hands looking pretty I’m probably going to be less inclined to want to mess that up. Well, heres hoping anyway.

Challenge four was to take time out everyday for you. Just to sound some time reading or taking a bubble bath, or anything that will make you happy and that you enjoy. It sounds simple but I don’t know easy it will be to keep up. I’m going to try though.

Keep checking back for updates I do intend to blog a lot more frequently now

Right time for another London’s Dead post. Primrose Hill in Camden, opposite Regent’s park is one of the highest points in London. It was also somewhere I wanted to visit as a child as it played a key role in one of my favourite books, The one hundred and one dalmatians by Dodie Smith. For those who have not read the book Primrose Hill is where Pongo and Missis stand to alert other dogs of their stolen puppies via the twilight bark. Personally I much prefer the book, it’s a lot darker than the film, though it’s Disney what do you expect.

Anyway that’s not why I visited there this weekend. No I went because Primrose Hill was where in 1678 the body of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey was found stabbed with his own sword. Godfrey was a well known magistrate and friend of diarist Samuel Peyps. Apparently he had been warned a few weeks earlier by Dr Israel Tong, a Presbyterian minister, and Titus Oates, an unfrocked priest of a Catholic conspiracy to replace Charles II with the Duke of York (later James II). Godfrey began investigations into this but was murdered, possibly in Somerset House on the Strand. A catholic sliversmith, Prance, later confessed to being hired to carry out the deed.

Also in 1820 there were plans to turn the area into a massive cemetery which could hold 5,000 bodies, however locals campaigned agaist this and it has remained a public park.

For those of you who have just read that and panicked, no I am not doing it to loose weight, in fact the programme is designed that you will only loose weight you need to loose. Skippy has already blogged all of this in much more detail so go check it out if your interested.

Anyway as I am on a completely liquid diet this week (til Monday) I thought it was the perfect time to get the tongue piercing I have been thinking about for a while. Pictures will follow shortly as soon as the swelling has gone down a bit, so in a day or two I guess. So far it is not hurting as much as I expected, certainly a lot less than other piercings I’ve had, and the strangest bit is just getting used to having a piece of metal in my mouth.

If anyone’s interested in this sort of thing it was done at Cold Steel in Camden, who also did one of my top ear piercings and Skippy’s one and who we would most definitely go to again.

Right so this is offically my last full day in Tembe, then I go to Cape Town for a week for a tour round the Western Cape.

So what has been happening here. Loads. Last Thursday was probably the best day so far. We saw so many animals. Antelope, monkeys, including a type I have never seen before, loads of birds (there are so many birds here, apparently most of the ones found in this region can be seen in the park), lots of zebra, warthogs, lions, buffalo, 4 white rhino, elephants. In fact one day, it may have been Thursday I can’t remember, we saw three breeding herds and a bull elephant at the water hole all at the same time, thats a total of twenty eight elephants all in one place!

Other cool things I’ve seen are a suni, also known as a Livingstone’s antelope, the smallest one in the park and very endangered, two side-striped jackals, a crocodile, several different types of mongoose, wild dogs and puppies, and on Saturday we saw a lion that the park had no record of. It had been missed when they logged all the others.

For those asking I have taken loads of pictures, over 400 so far and wil upload some as soon as I can, this computer doesn’t seem to want to let me. Miss you all and wish you could have come too. This place is simply amazing.

Since the first day things have kind of fallen nto a routine here. We go out lion monitoringat 5:30 every morning. Check the swamps to see if it is safe for the local women to come in to gather reeds then head back for a quick break before going out elephant monitoring at about 10.

I have seen loads of wildlife here. Not just lions and elephants but mongooses, warthogs, buffalo, black and white rhino, giraffe, zebra as well as the aforementioned antelope. Also yesterday saw some monkeys hanging around camp. I made the mistake of leaving some oranges on the puicnic table outside and came back out to find one of them tucking in!

Also seen loads of birds. This place is a bird watchers paradise. Hornbills (like Zazu from the lion king), doves, rollers, kingfishers. Some of them are just the most amazing colours.

Oh and I just wanted to let you know that the park I am staying in has a webcam in one of the hides. I have seen loads of animals from there; I can’t remember the URL currently but is you google Tembe Elephant Park you’ll find it.

I promised you updates and as I have been here for a week I should probably deliver.

Journey here was good though incredably long. Dispite leaving home by 3 on Thursday afternoon, I didn’t get to the park until 6 on Friday evening. Partly due to a 5 hour drive from the airport to the park. We ae in the middle of nowhere. Though that is not a bad thing. the drive was actally quie nice, I got to see quite a lot of the local country side which is a lot different to back home. Though I was reminded of Dartmoor as the local villages just let their cows and goats roam freely, even if that means across the roads. Was most amused when we got nearer to Tembe and found a road sign, ‘Beware hippo’ now theres definately something you don’t get in England!

Made it into the research camp just as it was getting dark so didn’t really see anything of the park, except some nyala, a type of antelope just as we got through the gate. I was reliably informed they are like sheep and it appears they really are. Everywhere you go in t6he park there are hundreds of them.

Went out for my first monitoring session the next morning, exciting. Several of the lions in the park have radio collars fitted to help track their movements. Picked up a few beeps but didn’t see any lions, however did see a huge bull elephant. He was just standing calmly at the side of the road and didn’t seem bothered by us at all. Really wish I’d thought to grab my camera before going out. Also saw lots of antelope of several different varieties and a black rhino. the more endangered of the two types.

More soon…

Just had this song come up, according to Last.FM it’s dated 11 Dec 1989. Just shows how things don’t change. Especially the bit about Heathrow! I’m so worried about what’s hapenin’ today, in the middle east, you know And I’m worried about the baggage retrieval system they’ve got at Heathrow I’m so worried about the fashions today, I don’t think they’re good for your feet And I’m so worried about the shows on TV that sometimes they want to repeat

I’m so worried about what’s happenin’ today, you know And I’m worried about the baggage retrieval system they’ve got at Heathrow I’m so worried about my hair falling out and the state of the world today And I’m so worried about bein’ so full of doubt about everything, anyway

I’m so worried about modern technology I’m so worried about all the things that they dump in the sea I’m so worried about it, worried about it, worried, worried, worried

I’m so worried about everything that can go wrong I’m so worried about whether people like this song I’m so worried about this very next verse, it isn’t the best that I’ve got And I’m so worried about whether I should go on, or whether I should just stop

I’m worried about whether I ought to have stopped And I’m worried about, it’s the sort of thing I ought to know And I’m worried about the baggage retrieval system they’ve got at Heathrow

I’m so worried about whether I should have stopped then I’m so worried that I’m driving everyone ’round the bend I’m worried about the baggage retrieval system they’ve got at Heathrow
